Quarterly Global Stock and Bond Market Updates

1st Quarter 2012 Quarterly Investment Update Quarterly returns for the broad US market, as measured by the Russell 3000 Index, were 12.87%. Asset class returns ranged from 14.69% for large cap growth stocks to 11.12% for large cap value stocks. The strongest sectors were financials and information technology, while the laggard was highly regulated utilities. Value under-performed growth, and small caps underperformed large caps.
4th Quarter 2011 Quarterly Investment Update Led by the excellent performance of US stocks, global equity markets posted strong returns in the quarter. Those returns, however, were not sufficient to overcome a dismal third quarter, and most markets had negative returns for the year.
3rd Quarter 2011 Quarterly Investment Update Equity markets around the world had their worst quarter since the end of 2008, as investors reacted negatively to the sovereign debt problems in Europe, the budget stalemate in the US, and poor economic data in most developed countries and in some large emerging countries such as China. The broad US market lost over 15%.
2nd Quarter 2011 Quarterly Investment Update Despite weaker-than-expected economic data in the US andEurope’s sovereign-debt crisis, equity markets around the world were little changed in the second quarter. Thebroad US market was flat for the quarter.
1st Quarter 2011 Quarterly Investment Update Despite natural disasters in Japan and other countries, increasedpolitical turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa, and rising commodities prices, which could hamper theeconomic recovery in developed countries, equity markets around the world had good performance in the firstquarter. The broad US market gained over 6%, with all asset classes delivering positive returns.
4th Quarter 2010 Quarterly Investment Update With few exceptions, equity markets around the world continuedtheir strong performance in the fourth quarter, and had a second consecutive year of outstanding gains. In the US,the fourth quarter saw much improved economic and financial data.
3rd Quarter 2010 Quarterly Investment Update The U.S. equity market rallied strongly in the third quarter,reversing the dismal performance of the second quarter. The broad U.S. market gained over 11% in the quarter,with most asset classes delivering double-digit positive returns. Performance in other developed markets was generally good.
